Gaer Christian Centre is a large white triangular building located on the corner between Highfield Road and Gaer Park Drive near the top of the hill in the Gaer area of Newport. The exhibition space is on the ground floor, there are no steps for access to the building or toilets and double doors can be opened to ease access for wheelchairs.
A useful landmark known by most locals is the Spar shop on Bassaleg Road, steps/ramp to the right of the shop lead you up to face the Centre building on the opposite side of the Highfield Road junction.
Leave the M4 at Junction 27 and turn East onto Risca Road (B4591), signs say "Newport town centre". Turn right onto Western Avenue and continue down hill to the far end of the road, at the T-junction turn Left onto Bassaleg Road. Travelling up-hill and reaching the cemetery on your Left (trees and a large surrounding fence/wall) take the second right onto Gaer Park Drive. The Gaer Christian Centre is immediately in front of you up a steep incline. CAUTION, cars expect you to turn left from Gaer Park Drive on to Highfield road!
There is no car park but non-residents can park in most of the surrounding streets, please check for parking restrictions yourself.
Newport city centre is undergoing remodelling, if you don't know the city it's best to avoid travelling through it unless you're after an adventure.
Buses to the Gaer include the 151 and 11, 11(A) from the town centre bus station and new bus ranks. Cost as of July 2008 is £1.20 single, under-5s travel free. There are bus stops on Highfield Road and Bassaleg Road - tell the driver you want to be dropped at the "Spar" (but not "Gaer Shops")
According to FirstGroup.com buses are operated by Glyn Williams Travel (01495 229237), Newport Transport (01633 670563) and Stagecoach in South Wales (0870 6082608).
Newport Railway Station is run by Arriva Trains, see the NWP page from National Rail Enquiries for more information
The station is about a 40 minute walk, Newport is surprisingly hilly! A taxi from the station is about £8 (2008).
Gaer Christian Centre is near the top of the Gaer hill. There are no cycle ranks nearby and the area does have a problem with petty vandalism and graffiti. Enquire inside and you may be able to secrete your bike "through the other door" (side entrance) at your own risk - if not then there are plenty of lampposts.
The best route from town is probably Queensway (outside the railway station), Clytha Park Road (across railway), Caerau Road (steep hill), Caerau Crescent, Risca Road (past the Handpost Inn) onto Bassaleg Road and then up to Gaer Park Drive (near the Spar shop).
The Riverfront Arts Centre is a light blue, highly modern building lit with multiple colours of light at night. It lies just south of the "Old Green Bridge" (aka Town Bridge, Clarence Place) on Kingsway (A4042) and sits between the Kingsway and the River Usk itself. It is a short distance from Newport City centre, Newport's new footbridge and Newport Castle (a Cadw site). Newport Castle is listed for OS map 171: ST 312884 by Cadw.
Newport Tourist Information, telephone (01633) 842 962, and Caerleon Tourist Information details can be found at the Newport.gov.uk website.
The Riverfront is letter "A" in the map below. Details for arriving by car, bus, train, cycle or on foot follow the map.
Leave the M4 at Junction 26 and head South towards Newport centre on Malpas Road (A4051). Both branches of the A4042 will eventually bring you out alongside the Riverfront Arts Centre.
Newport is currently undergoing a major regeneration project and so roads and parking areas are subject to change. There is, as of December 2007, parking South of the arts centre along Usk Way next to the River. This is behind the Newport [Leisure] Centre.
The Riverfront is within 100m walk of the main city bus station. According to FirstGroup.com buses are operated by Glyn Williams Travel (01495 229237), Newport Transport (01633 670563) and Stagecoach in South Wales (0870 6082608). FirstGroup also provide a very handy printable town centre map.
Newport Railway Station is run by Arriva Trains, see the NWP page from National Rail Enquiries for more information
The Riverfront is on Sustrans National Cycle Route 47 (The Celtic Trail) adjacent to a "Rowe type milepost".
There are lots of railings which may be suitable for attaching a bicycle to. But we are unsure at the time of writing if The Riverfront provide cycle racks.
The Riverfront is easily accessible from the centre of Newport. From HSBC Bank head down hill passing The Principality on your left, continue down skinner street and you will see the Riverfront in front of you across a busy dual carriageway. Toucan crossings are provided.
From the East bank of the river either the Old Green Bridge or new footbridge will lead you to the Riverfront building which is plainly seen when making your crossing, paths follow the river bank direct to the arts centre.
From the M4, exit at junction 27 and take the B4591 Risca Road towards Newport centre (in a south-easterly direction).
At the first roundabout, fork left into Fields Park Road. Nant Coch Church is just the other side of the second turning on the left (the Fields Park Avenue turn).
